• You must have held a Full Motorcycle Licence for at least 3 years
• Be a fit & proper person
• Full or Part-time positions available
• Previous experience not required as Full training can be provided

Different Levels of Motorcycle Instructor

Downtrained Instructor

Trainee instructors are referred to as 'Downtrained instructors'. A downtrained motorcycle instructor is effectively an instructor who is working under the supervision of a fully qualified instructor. Downtrained instructors are allowed to teach trainees without being physically supervised, but are only able to deliver CBT training courses.

Cardington CBT Instructor

The next level up from a Downtrained Instructor is a Cardington CBT Instructor. In order to obtain this qualification and become a Cardington CBT Instructor, candidates must under go a 2 day assessment conducted by a DVSA examiner to show they are competant to deliver CBT courses without supervision.

Just like a Downtrained Instructor, a Cardington CBT Instructor can still only teach CBT courses. However, once an instructor has passed the Cardington CBT assessment, they are no longer required to work under the supervision of another instructor, and can also now supervise other Downtrained Instructors.

Direct Access Qualified Instructor

All Instructors have to pass the Cardington CBT assessment before they can proceed onto the next level of instructor, which is a Direct Access Scheme Qualified Instructor (DAS Instructor).

To become a DAS Instructor, you must first have passed the Cardington CBT Assessment. Instructors must then attend a further half day assessment conducted with a DVSA examiner to evidence that they are capable of teaching pupils how to ride motorcycle's larger than 125cc. Once instructors have passed the DVSA Cardington DAS Assessment, they then earn the right to call themselves a DAS Instructor, and are then qualified to teach and deliver both CBT and full motorcycle licence training courses.

Most motorcycle instructors aspire to become DAS Instructors, since this allows them to provide the most common type of motorcycle training, which is CBT and full motorcycle training.

Enhanced Rider Scheme Instructor

The final level of motorcycle instructor is an Enhanced Rider Scheme Instructor (ERS Instructor). This is for instructors who want to further teach people who have already acquired their motorcycle licence an approved DVSA course, which is aimed at improving existing licence holder's riding to a more advanced level.

Only existing DAS Instructors can apply to become an ERS Instructor, and must undertake a 3 part test to acquire the qualification:

• Part 1 - Theory Test (Multiple Choice & Hazard Perception)
• Part 2 - Practical Riding Ability Test
• Part 3 - Practical Instructional Ability Test

Upon successful completion of the 3 tests, ERS Instructors can then teach the DVSA's Enhanced Rider Scheme courses.
