FAQ's

The world of driving can be a very confusing place. So, to help out, we have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions for you to have a browse through.

Hopefully these points will address any queries or concerns you may have, but if you are still unsure about anything, then please feel free to contact us by phone or email with your question, and we will endeavour to do the best we can to help you out!

Covid-19 Questions

What happens if my CBT, Theory Test or Module 1 Certificate expire during Lockdown?

Following the Governments Covid-19 announcement on 4th January 2021, ALL RIDER & DRIVER TRAINING (INCLUDING CBT) continues to be suspended until further notice.

This suspension currently also INCLUDES CBT!

Unfortunately no exceptions have been made and these restrictions also apply to the following:

  • Key workers
  • Essential workers
  • Delivery Riders
  • Couriers

Please note that if your CBT is due to expire, it will not be extended!. This means that if your CBT is expiring you will not be allowed to continue to ride your motorcycle/scooter (unless you have a full UK driving licence and are entitled to ride a 50cc moped)

Unfortunately, any existing Module 1 pass certificates or theory certificates that are also due to expire during the lockdown suspension period will not be extended either. This means that you will need to re-take these tests again once the restriction period finishes.

Can I take My CBT in Tier 3?

Yes you can do your CBT in Tier 3.

Tier 3 does not prevent CBT Training or Motorcycle Training and testing from being conducted.

You can view current availability and book online here.

Can I still do my CBT test in Tier 4?

No. The Government have advised that all motorcycle training (including CBT) in Tier 4 regions are suspended until further notice

Are motorcycle tests still going ahead in Tier 4?

No. The Government have advised that all motorcycle training (including CBT) in Tier 4 regions are suspended until further notice

Motorcycle FAQ's

How do I get a CBT Licence?

  1. You must be at least 16 year of age (to ride a 50cc moped) or 17 years or above to ride up to 125cc).
  2. You must have either a UK Provisional, UK Full, or EU Driving Licence (with supporting D91 Form).
  3. Be able to demonstrate basic balance and co-ordination (usually, but not always, this is means being able to ride a bicycle to a competent standard).
  4. Make sure you have read, and understand the Highway Code, and UK road traffic procedure.
  5. Choose a date and book a CBT course online. or over the phone by calling our offices on 020 8597 7333 or 0800 848 8418.

Can I fail my CBT Test?

Can I Fail My CBT TestNo, CBT is not officially a test, so therefore you cannot technically "fail." However, CBT is an ongoing assessment of your suitability to ride a motorcycle, scooter or moped on the road in the UK unaccompanied. As such, not everyone will be successful in this assessment, and some people often refer to an unsuccessful assessment as a "fail."

We understand that this can seem confusing, so we have dedicated an entire page for more details and information on the question can you fail a CBT test?

I cannot speak English very well, can I still do a CBT?

CBT but cannot understand EnglishThe short answer to this is no. Even if you know how to ride!

A language barrier issue causes concerns in many ways. Firstly it becomes very difficult for us to establish if the CBT pupil actually understands our instructions. This can result in a pupil failing to complete exercises to a satisfactory standard, and worse still, could be dangerous to the pupil and others pupils in the class if any pupil does not understand what he/she should be doing.

Element D also requires us to check the pupils knowledge of the Highway Code. An inability to communicate, to a conversational level, could lead to the pupil being unable to satisfy our requirements as laid out by the DVSA, to check that the pupil actually understands the requirements of the highway code.

Finally, any language barrier could be very dangerous in the last section of CBT, Element E. In this section, (commonly referred to as "the road ride") if the pupil cannot understand and comprehend instructions given over a radio, on the public road with various variable potential hazards, it seriously jeopardises the safety of the pupil, instructor, fellow students, and any thrid party member of the public.

It is for these same reasons that we cannot allow translators on any of our training courses, including CBT.

What is the biggest bike I can ride with a CBT?

What is the biggest bike I can ride with a CBTThe biggest bike/scooter you can ride once you have completed your CBT is anything up to 125cc (if you are 16 years of age this is limited to 50cc until your 17th birthday). You are not allowed to carry pillion passengers, and cannot use motorways either.

Unlike when you pass your driving test in a car, it does not matter if you complete your CBT on an automatic scooter or manual motorcycle, you will still be able to ride both! (i.e. If you complete your CBT on an automatic you can still ride a manual bike, and vice versa).

Do I still need to do the whole CBT if I've done it before?

CBT RenewalYes, there is no shortcut to getting your CBT, even if you have done it before.

There is no such thing as a "CBT Renewal". Pupil's who are completing their CBT again, must still complete all of the required Elements stipulated by the DVSA, including the mandatory, minimum 2 hour road ride, Element E.

Of course, if a pupil can demonstrate an understanding of all the required Elements and complete all exercises satisfactorily, and in a timely manner, then the training day can move more quickly. However, this also depends on the other pupil's attending the CBT session on that day, who may not be as experienced, and may take longer to achieve the same standard.

The best advice we can give "experienced CBT riders" is to pass their motorcycle theory test, and then progress and pass your full motorcycle licence, so you never have to take another CBT session again!

Do I get my CBT Certificate on the same day?

Yes. Providing you successfully complete all Elements of the CBT course, you will be issued with the DL196 CBT Certificate on the same day, at the end of your course.

Do I still need to do a CBT if i want to do the full motorcycle licence?

DAS RequirementsYes, you must have a current and valid CBT certificate to attend a full motorcycle course. This CBT must be the original (not a photocopy), and be valid at all times, including on the day of any practical test you are taking.

You also need to have passed your motorcycle theory test, which must also be valid at all times, including on the day of any practical test you are taking.

If you are still unsure of exactly how to get your full motorcycle licence, please view our motorcycle flowchart, which explains step-by-step exactly what you need to do to get your full motorcycle licence.

I've lost my CBT. Can I get a replacement CBT Certificate?

Yes. If you have completed A CBT with us within the last 2 years, we can sue you with a replacement/duplicate certificate.

You have 2 options for obtaining this:

  1. Arrange to come and collect the certificate in person from our Head Office address. The fee for this is £20
  2. We can post your replacement certificate via Royal Main Special Delivery. You will need to confirm in writing the address you would like us to send the certificate to. The fee for this option is £30. Despite sending the certificate via Special Delivery, we will not be liable for certificates which go missing in the post.
